Château de Vessière, Ortus by Vessière 2019

Our opinion: A small-scale cuvée. On the nose, it’s pure, it’s bewitching. You can smell a lot of small black fruits, accompanied by spices. In the mouth, it is frank and full of fruit. It is round and greedy, a real pleasure to taste. This one is accompanied by very supple tannins.

Ortus, in Latin, means “birth”, “beginning”. It is the first wine of the vineyard without added sulphites. A smooth and fruity wine!

The winemaker

In the heart of the Costières de Nîmes, in the extreme south of the Rhône Valley, Château Vessière extends over 65 hectares of vines. Located at the gateway to the Camargue, the estate benefits from an exceptional terroir and climate. This beautiful property belonged to Mademoiselle Lucie de Vessière, who became Teulon’s wife. The estate has since been passed down from generation to generation. It was in 1975 that Philippe Teulon took over the reins. The first bottling will take place in 1978 but the cuvée will only be consumed privately. It is in 1979 that the wine will be marketed. Philippe passes his passion on to one of his sons, Vincent. Since 2007, Vincent and his wife Lucie have continued the history of the family. Together, they have developed working techniques, in particular with the conversion of the domain to organic. Currently, the couple live there with their two children in order to reconcile family life and demanding work. Philippe is still present daily on the estate and works in close collaboration with Vincent. Since 2019, the estate has also been in biodynamic conversion with the DEMETER label.

The Appellation

The Pays d’Oc PGI wines benefit from a wide creative palette through which 58 grape varieties authorised by the label are expressed. The vineyards, between mountains, valleys, and oceans with very diverse soils cover more than half of the Languedoc’s wine production.
It is a territory that covers more than 120,000 hectares of vineyards between the sea and the mountains, open to the multiple influences of a Mediterranean-temperate climate. Between the Camargue and the Pyrenees, the sunny wine roads, taken 26 centuries ago by the Greeks and Romans, are today those of 20,000 winegrowers in the Pays d’Oc. The red wines of this region are mostly easy-drinking wines, whose very fruity aromas are the praise of an ancient and fabulous land.
